How to Learn Vocabulary Fast: The Night Before a Quiz

A child sits at a desk in the evening in front of a small fan of cards, with an alarm clock and, in a corner, a pillow with a crescent moon.

It's 7 pm, the vocabulary quiz is tomorrow, and your kid has studied… nothing. Deep breath, it happens in the best families. Learning vocabulary fast works if you skip one thing: rereading the list ten more times. Quizzing is way faster, and here's how. (Not a habit, promise. The calm version is the 7 day plan.)

How to Learn Vocabulary Fast: Tonight's Plan

First, quiz everything once. You say the word, your kid answers. Two minutes later you know what's solid, and nobody wastes time on words that are already there. Rereading makes everything feel familiar. Quizzing shows the truth.

Then only the shaky ones. Correct words get a break. Wrong ones go into the next round, and the next, until only two or three are left. Each round takes a few minutes.

Take a real break. Two short rounds with a break beat one long hour. During the break: a glass of water, a bit of movement, phone away.

Then bed. Better to sleep early than cram late. Sleep helps learning settle: in a study at the University of Lübeck (Gais, Lucas and Born, 2006), students remembered vocabulary better when they slept after learning it. At breakfast, a quick round with the hardest words is enough.

A Vocabulary App for Fast Practice

With VocaScan, an iOS app for the iPhone, your child photographs the vocabulary page and the app turns it into a quiz in both directions. Weak words go into their own quiz, which your kid starts alone. The night before gets shorter. Even better: enter the quiz date ahead of time, reminders arrive 7, 3 and 1 day before, and the emergency night never happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can you study vocabulary fast?

Quiz everything once, repeat only the wrong words, take breaks and get enough sleep.

How many words can you learn in one evening?

It depends on the kid. No miracles: day to day, 5 to 10 new words is sensible. More in how long to study vocabulary each day.

Should my child stay up to study?

No. Sleep helps memory. A quick round in the morning beats two more hours awake at night.
