How to Study for a Vocabulary Test: A 7-Day Plan (and How Many Words per Day)
The Spanish vocab test is Friday, and on Thursday night there are still 40 words to learn. Sound familiar? If you're wondering how to study for a vocabulary test without the last-minute panic, the answer is a plan: ten minutes a day is enough.
The secret isn't more study time, it's spreading it out. Here's how to break up learning vocabulary over the week.
How many vocabulary words per day?
For middle schoolers, 5 to 10 new words a day is a good rule of thumb. For a list of 40 words, that's 8 words a day over five days.
The key is a quick daily review of the words from the days before. The list grows without the first words fading. It's the easiest way to study vocabulary so it sticks.
The 7-day plan for a vocabulary test
- 7 days before: split the list into five parts. Learn the first 8 words and quiz them at dinner.
- 6 to 3 days before: 8 new words a day, plus 5 minutes of vocabulary practice on all the earlier words. Mark the misses.
- 2 days before: no new words. Quiz the whole list in both directions and rework only the marked words.
- The night before the vocabulary test: one quick run-through, then bed. No late-night cramming.
List on Monday, quiz on Friday? The 5-day version
Many teachers hand out the vocab list on Monday for a Friday quiz. Then squeeze the plan: Monday to Wednesday, a third of the list each day plus a review of the earlier words. Thursday, the whole list in both directions. Friday morning, one quick check at breakfast.
How to study vocabulary words in 10 minutes
What matters is that your child comes up with the answer alone. Cover the English, have them say the Spanish word out loud and shuffle the order. Why covering the answer beats rereading is explained here.
For Spanish vocab practice, a French vocabulary quiz or any other language, the rule is the same: always practice both directions.
What if the vocab test is tomorrow?
Even the night before, quizzing beats rereading. Cover the answers, go through the whole list once, review the misses twice, then sleep. That usually does more than hours of reading.
Follow the plan with a vocabulary app
With VocaScan, your child snaps a photo of the vocab page in their textbook, and the app builds a quiz in both directions. Enter the quiz date: reminders arrive 7, 3 and 1 day before, exactly in the rhythm of this plan. Weak words get their own quiz, so learning vocabulary stays focused on what still needs work.
