How to Learn Vocabulary With Flashcards: A Simple Guide

A child sorts index cards into a box with five slots.

Flashcards are a classic way to study vocabulary. Often a child copies the whole word list from the textbook: the foreign word on the front, the translation on the back. An hour later their hand is tired, and they still lack the context for Friday's vocab test.

Myth: Writing Many Flashcards Means Learning a Lot

Copying is not learning. When a child copies a list, the brain runs on autopilot. On the test they have to pull the word from memory, just like active recall. A card only helps once your child uses it.

How to Learn Vocabulary With Flashcards: Make Better Cards

  • Less is more: only write the words your child hesitates on.
  • Add an example sentence: put the translation and a short sentence from class on the back.
  • One word per card: the cards shuffle more easily.

In Spanish class the sentence matters: banco can mean a bank or a park bench.

The Leitner System With Five Boxes

Three boxes are enough to start. When the word list grows, around 7th grade, a Leitner system with five boxes pays off. New cards start in box 1 and are quizzed daily. A right answer moves the card up one box, a mistake sends it back to box 1. Box 2 is checked every 3 days, box 3 once a week, box 4 every two weeks. Box 5 holds the sure words, reviewed just before a big test.

Flashcards Without the Handwriting: The App

With VocaScan, your child takes a photo of the vocabulary page in the textbook. The app recognizes the word pairs, with nothing to type, and builds quizzes in both directions. For weak words your child starts a quiz of their own. If you enter the test date, reminders arrive 7, 3 and 1 day before.
