“Can you quiz me?” Ten minutes later, everyone at the kitchen table is frustrated. The short answer: to study vocabulary words for a test, your child self-tests first, then you quiz in writing, mixed up, for 10 minutes max. Six rules for calmer evenings.
How to Study Vocabulary Words for a Test: 6 Rules for Parents
1. Your child self-tests first
You are the final check, not the study buddy. In a well-known experiment (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006), students who tested themselves remembered much more a week later than students who reread. So your child covers the answers and tests themselves first, using active recall.
2. Quiz in writing, not just out loud
The Spanish vocabulary quiz on Friday is written. You say “tree,” your child writes. Out loud, árbol sounds right every time; on paper, the accent is often missing. You only catch that in writing.
3. Mark mistakes, skip the comments
A small dot next to the word is enough. No sighing, no “we went over this yesterday.” Every dot tells you which word comes up again tomorrow.
4. Stop after 10 minutes
Even if the list isn't finished. Ten calm minutes beat half an hour of tears. The rest fits into the 7-day plan before the test.
5. Swap roles
Once a week, your child quizzes you. Checking your answers means one more pass through the list. Get a few wrong on purpose and let them correct you.
6. Short rounds in daily life
Five words at dinner or in the carpool line count too. Use yesterday's marked words: those are the ones your child needs most.

Practice Without You: A Vocabulary Quiz App
VocaScan is an iOS app for the iPhone: your child takes a photo of the vocab page in their textbook, the app recognizes the word pairs and quizzes both directions with instant feedback. Weak words get their own quiz. Enter the test date and reminders arrive 7, 3 and 1 day before.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I quiz my child on vocabulary?
Short and regular: 10 minutes a day beats one long session the night before.
Should I quiz out loud or in writing?
Both, but at least once in writing before the quiz so the spelling sticks.
What if my child gets upset when I quiz them?
Stop and pick it up tomorrow. A game often helps, like one of our vocabulary games for kids.
