Vocabulary App for Kids: 5 Things Parents Should Check

A vocabulary app can make studying easier, but the App Store is full of options. How can parents tell if an app will really help with the next vocab quiz? Five criteria.

Vocabulary App for Kids: 5 Criteria Parents Should Look For

1. Content comes from the textbook

Generic lessons help little if different words show up on the test. A good app quizzes the words your child actually has to learn.

2. Active recall, not just watching

A nice design is useless if kids only read answers that are already filled in. They should find the answer themselves, just like active recall.

3. Instant feedback

Kids see right away whether they were right, and can practice their weak words.

4. No distractions, no pressure

Flashing ads distract and ticking clocks stress kids out. Letting kids set their own pace works better, for example with the plan for the week before the test.

5. Clear costs and a real trial

Before subscribing, check what it costs after the trial and whether your child really uses it.

A Vocabulary App Built Around the Textbook: VocaScan

VocaScan is an iOS app for the iPhone. Your child takes a photo of the textbook page, the app recognizes the word pairs with no typing and quizzes both directions. Weak words get their own quiz, plus there is a word search game. Enter the test date and reminders arrive 7, 3 and 1 day before. VocaScan can be tried free for seven days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free vocabulary app for kids?

Many apps are free to download, but key features cost extra or come with ads. Read what the free version includes first.

Should kids practice on an app or on paper?

Both work if the child actively tests themselves. Paper has no screen, for example with flashcards. An app gives instant feedback.

What is the best way to practice Spanish or French words?

Watch spelling and accents, and quiz both directions. More tips: Spanish vocabulary and false friends.
